The Chilean Society of Linguistics (SOCHIL) is a non-profit organization that brings together
researchers dedicated to the development and projection of the linguistic discipline in Chile.
SOCHIL has played a crucial role in the promotion and consolidation of linguistics in Chile
since its founding in 1971. Its main objective is to sustain a plural, critical, and collaborative
academic space for its community.
SOCHIL’s activities focus on strengthening the discipline, helping to connect new
researchers, and promoting international and regional connections.
● Organization of the SOCHIL international congress: It convenes national and international
specialists every two years to participate in high-level academic discussions. The XXIV
SOCHIL Congress was held in October 2025. The next congress will take place in 2027.
● Intergenerational collaboration: In a joint effort with the Chilean Agrupación Jóvenes
Lingüistas, SOCHIL has been organizing specialized talks featuring experienced members
and emerging researchers. This collaboration aims to unite different generations of linguists,
fostering mentorship and the exchange of innovative ideas.
● Public consultation and expert voice: It serves as an expert voice on all language issues of
public interest, for example, by providing consultation to TV channels regarding children’s
language shows.
● Regional and international cooperation: It spearheads the formation and consolidation of
ties with homologous societies, such as SAEL (Argentina) and ABRALIN (Brazil), fostering a
Latin American network of linguistic societies. This includes the organization of joint events
like the online Transcordillera SOCHIL–SAEL Conference and the online ABRALIN–SOCHIL
Conference.
● Academic outreach: It attends academic conferences, seminars, and thematic meetings and
maintains active representation in spaces such as the Academia Chilena de la Lengua and
the UNESCO Chair (reading and writing).
● SOCHIL undergraduate thesis contest: During their international congress, SOCHIL
recognizes and rewards the most outstanding undergraduate theses, promoting research
excellence among young linguists.
● Dissemination and communication: It actively manages social media communication to
highlight and promote the achievements and scientific events of its members and to
advance the discipline through different media outlets
