NETWORK OF REGIONAL LINGUISTIC AND SOCIOCULTURAL ARCHIVES IN SOUTH AMERICA

Various academic institutions in South America working in linguistic and cultural documentation with indigenous peoples in the region have set up a South American Network of Regional Linguistic and Sociocultural Archives.

This Network aims to strengthen the interaction and exchange of information and documentary resources between archivists, native and non-native researchers, and members of indigenous communities in the region. In addition to this general aim, among the foundational objectives, the following stand out: to contribute to the knowledge and dissemination in national societies of the languages, social values, oral traditions and verbal art of the South American indigenous communities, as well as the dialectal variants of Spanish and Portuguese and the languages of migration in the region; to integrate the linguistic and cultural archives of the Network into broader, national and international digital networks; to ensure the long-term preservation of databases, as well as implementing the technological resources towards compatibility among the archives, facilitating the future establishment of automatic procedures and mechanisms of unification and mutual access to data. Finally, we seek to ensure compatibility in classifying the contents of the files, thus increasing the possibility of relating and comparing features among the languages of the region.

This regional network has its origins in the cooperation and exchange between members of South American institutions. The collaboration has long been active at informal and personal levels, in particular thanks to researchers participating in DoBeS and ELDP programs, as well as using similar technology in individual centers (Seifart et al. 2008, Golluscio & Vidal 2018). The project encompasses CONICET, Universidad Nacional de Formosa and Universidad Nacional de San Juan, Argentina; Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and Instituto de Investigaciones para la Amazonía Peruana, Perú; Universidad de Chile; CEADUC, Centro de Estudios Antropológicos of the Universidad Católica de Asunción, Paraguay; and Universidad del Azuay, Ecuador. The Museu do Índio and the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro through Bruna Franchetto’s active participation, as well as the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, Brazil (through Denny Moore and Vilacy Galucio) have shared the objectives of the Network since its inception (Drude et al. 2009, Golluscio et al. 2013).

The first outcome of the Network was the collective volume Lingüística de la documentación. Textos fundacionales y proyecciones en América del Sur (Golluscio et al. 2019). In 2020, this initiative was assigned full legal status by an Agreement for Scientific and Technical Collaboration signed by all its members. The proposal is open to other South American archives or institutions that wish to join this initiative on the understanding that the Network’s ethical guidelines are respected.
