The social history of languages is a growing field of research internationally. Although there are many monographs in this field, it lacks a general and widely accepted theoretical and methodological framework. The Social History of the Basque Language project of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language has sought to make a contribution and offer a methodological proposal to international researchers, especially those working in the fields of sociolinguistics and sociology of language.
This work is the result of a long methodological reflection that has been developed in various publications. It is a presentation of the taxonomy and the methodological proposal that our team has created to help researchers in their work.
The taxonomy has been created in order to analyse and classify sociolinguistic information, taking into account the most common variables found to be reliable in the international bibliography related to the sociology of language.
To create this methodology and this taxonomy, we have studied the methodological results since the foundation of sociolinguistics and the tools it has developed, as well as its main theoretical concepts, and we have tried to create a broad, flexible and detailed methodology and taxonomy.
The original point of departure for this methodology is Basque Studies, but it can be applied almost completely to any international linguistic context, with some minor modifications.
