The International Society for Functional Linguistics aims to bring together linguists and researchers applying the principles of functional linguistics to the study of languages. SILF’s mission is to coordinate research and to disseminate the findings of studies carried out by researchers around the world. To this end, SILF publishes an international journal, La linguistique, (see below), organizes workshops and annual conferences, the proceedings of which are published in collaboration with the host university.
Since 1977, SILF’s official voice has been the international journal La Linguistique (Paris, Presses Universitaires de France), founded in 1965 by André Martinet. It is a journal devoted to all aspects of functional linguistics, ranging from the field of epistemology to the description and explanation of language acts.
SILF Annual Conferences
Annual conferences, organized by SILF in collaboration with a host university since 1974, bring together around a hundred society members from universities around the globe. SILF’s conferences are open to all linguists who wish to contribute to the collective reflection and debate of ideas within the framework of two or three proposed working themes. The linguistic situation in the host country is given special attention, and individual papers outside the scope of the conference’s working themes are also included in the conference program. The 43rd edition of the conference (2022) took place in San Sebastián (Spain), under the auspices of the Basque language Academy Euskaltzaindia. The 44th conference (2023) will be hosted by the University of the Peloponnese in Kalamata (Greece) from 17 to 20 October.
