CIPL is pleased to endorse and support a special issue of Cadernos de Linguística devoted to scientific associations in linguistics and their role in sustaining and developing the field. The special issue, titled Scientific Associations in Linguistics: History, Impact, and Current Perspectives, will publish original articles written by presidents (current or former) or other official representatives of linguistic associations.
Many associations have published commemorative books or special issues at key anniversaries. These materials, however, often circulate locally, in different languages and formats. The goal of this special issue is to provide a single open-access platform where associations from different regions can present:
- their history and institutional development;
- their contribution to research, teaching, conferences, publications and public engagement;
- the challenges they have faced over time (institutional, financial, political, social); and
- their current situation and future perspectives.
These texts may of course draw on existing internal reports or historical documents, but they should be prepared as new contributions specifically for this issue and for an international readership.
A suggested structure for the contributions, as well as further information about the project, is available at: https://cadernos.abralin.org/index.php/cadernos/associations
Cadernos de Linguística is an open-access journal edited by the Brazilian Linguistics Association (ABRALIN). In the most recent national evaluation by CAPES (the Brazilian federal agency responsible for research and graduate education assessment), the journal was classified as A1, the top category in the Qualis system. This label indicates that the journal is recognized by Brazilian graduate programmes as a high-standard venue for publication, which may be of interest to many associations and their members.
Who is invited to contribute?
- Presidents (current or former) or other formally designated representatives of national, regional or thematic linguistic associations.
- Co-authored texts (for example, a president together with a board member or a historian of the association) are welcome.
Suggested article profile
- Category in the journal: “Critical Perspective”.
- Focus: a reflective narrative that combines historical information, analysis of activities and candid discussion of challenges and prospects.
- Language: English is encouraged to maximize international readership, but the journal accepts manuscripts in other languages (see journal guidelines).
Timeline and submission
- Submission deadline: 30 October 2026
(to allow ample time for internal consultation within associations and careful preparation of the text). - Submissions should be made through the journal’s online platform:
https://cadernos.abralin.org
CIPL warmly invites all member societies to consider preparing a contribution for this special issue. Associations interested in participating are encouraged to consult the detailed description at the link above and to contact the guest editor, Miguel de Oliveira Jr. (Cadernos de Linguística), with any questions about scope, format or practical aspects of submission.
