Le Comité International Permanent des Linguistes (CIPL) / the Permanent International Committee of Linguists [1] announces that it will make available twice a year up to five travel grants of € 500 each (approx. US$ 550) for participation in a linguistics conference.
Of these grants, two are specifically intended for conferences organized by one of CIPL’s member organizations, or a conference co-organized by CIPL itself. This restriction does not apply to the three other travel grants.
Who is eligible
Advanced students in linguistics without a PhD are eligible to receive a once-only grant of € 500 to help fund their participation in a linguistics conference that will take place in another country than where the application resides.
Conditions
The student must present a paper at the conference. Grants for participation in a conference in the home country of the applicant are excluded. Only one author of co-authored papers can be supported by a CIPL grant. A co-author who submits an application for a grant must make clear what part he/she had in the preparation and what part he/she will have in the presentation. Only a co-author whose contribution consists of at least 50% of both the paper and the presentation is eligible for a grant.

The application should also include an abstract of the paper to be presented; a CV; proof that the paper has been accepted for presentation; proof that the conference will take place as scheduled; and a letter of support by the student’s academic advisor.
Proof of participation
After the conference, a substantial report of the awardee’s participation (a size of 500 to 800 words is recommended), accompanied by a copy of a certificate of participation, must be presented to CIPL.
Deadline
Applications should be sent to the Secretary-General of CIPL, Prof Dr Frieda Steurs, CIPLtravelgrant@gmail.com. The call is open twice a year: from March 1st till May 15th for conferences taking place between July 1st and December 31st and from October 1st till November 15th for conferences taking place between January 1st and July 1st. Only during these two periods, applications will be accepted.
Procedure
- A subcommittee of the Executive Committee of CIPL will evaluate the applications, aiming for a wide geographical distribution of both applicants and conferences.
- All subdisciplines of linguistics are eligible. No particular theory or approach in linguistics is favoured over any other.
- The Secretary-General of CIPL will announce the results of the grant applications during the second week of June and the last week of November.
- The applicant will receive € 350 immediately after the granting of the scholarship.
- The remaining € 150 will be transferred on receipt of the conference report and the certificate of attendance.
Application prior to notification
It is possible to submit an application before the organizers of a conference have informed the applicant that his/her paper has been selected for presentation. In such a case, the applicant submits a provisional application for a grant. If the grant is awarded, the applicant must inform CIPL immediately after acceptance by the conference, after which the first part of the grant will be paid out.
[1] CIPL is a non-profit, non-governmental organization aiming to promote the knowledge of linguistics throughout the world, to encourage the development of the science of linguistics and to stimulate co-operation among linguists. CIPL was founded in 1928 during the first International Congress of Linguists (ICL), which took place in The Hague. Every five years CIPL organises an ICL in close collaboration with linguists in the hosting nation. Every year CIPL prepares and publishes the Linguistic bibliography, aspires to give a complete and reliable survey of all linguistic publications, irrespective of the country of their appearance or the language in which they are written.
