“Jae-Woong Choe is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at Korea University in Seoul, Korea. He earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1987 and began his academic career at Soong-Sil University before joining Korea University’s Department of Linguistics in 1991, where he taught until his retirement in February 2019.
Professor Choe’s research centers on theoretical linguistics, with particular expertise in formal semantics and pragmatics, as well as computational and statistical approaches to linguistic analysis. His scholarly contributions span diverse areas including distributivity and quantification, wh-phenomena, delimiters, topic and focus structures, speech acts, implicature and inference, and discourse analysis. He has also made significant contributions to corpus linguistics and the utilization of various language resources in linguistic research.
Throughout his career, Professor Choe has been actively engaged in professional organizations and editorial work. He served as President of the Korean Society for Language and Information (1999-2001) and Editor-in-Chief of the Korean Journal of Linguistics (2000-2003). His international involvement includes membership on the PACLIC Steering Committee from 2005 to 2012, reflecting his commitment to advancing computational linguistics in the Asia-Pacific region.”
