Frederick J. Newmeyer received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, studying with Robert B. Lees. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. He is the author or editor of 12 books, including Linguistic Theory in America, The Politics of Linguistics, Language Form and Language Function, Possible and Probable Languages, and American Linguistics in Transition: From Post-Bloomfieldian Structuralism to Generative Grammar. Newmeyer has been both Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Linguistic Society of America, an editor of the journal Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, and an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
