The Center for Studies in Letters (CEL), established at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), Vila Real, Portugal, has been selected to host the 2023 annual colloquia of two European societies dedicated to the History of Linguistics: the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas (HSS) – founded in 1984 at the University of Oxford – and the Studienkreis ‘Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft’ (SGdS) – founded in 1988 at the Institut für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft in Münster. The HSS colloquium will occur between 4-6 September 2023, and the SGdS colloquium will follow on 7-9 September 2023.
Both societies are dedicated to studying the History of the Language Sciences. Their primary goals are to encourage the study and analysis of the history of all branches of language sciences, including non-European practices, such as colonial and missionary linguistics.
